The 2009 edition of the Carnival took place on a Sunday, for the first time. Starting at about 3.00pm, it continued until about 5.00am the following day.
As usual, the excitement was contagious. The street lights reflected the glittering, sequined costumes of the revelers, adding a surreal, dreamlike quality to the parade. By midnight, the well-lit streets of Calabar were packed with tireless spectators, dancing and following the carnival train along the 12 km route, to the stadium.
